2023 Artist in Residence Fern Cloud is a traditional Buffalo hide painter from the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate. She uses natural paint, bone brushes, and twigs to make her amazing pieces. She studied hide painting and Dakota florals during her residency and combined those two studies into this beautiful hide painting. Fern said she thinks it’s one of the first hide paintings to depict traditional Dakota floral design using traditional methods. It has been an honor learning with and supporting her work.
