Lexus Australia waited until the very last minute to reveal the price of it first electric vehicle, the Lexus UX 300e, doubtlessly while its local product planners watched which way Volvo moved with its new electric XC40.

As in Europe, the 2021 Lexus UX 300e now undercuts not only the Swedish car but the Mercedes-Bens EQA by a similar amount, but an Australian starting price of $74,000 for the entry-level UX 300e Luxury also reflects its lower specifications.

Its output is barely half the Volvo’s, its traction is limited by front-wheel drive and it 0-100km/h time of 7.5 seconds is 2.6 seconds slower than the dual-motor all-wheel drive Volvo. But not everyone wants or needs that level of performance from their small electric premium SUV.

Energy efficiency is far more frugal in the case of the Lexus and, although that doesn’t translate to a longer range, it does mean you’ll play significantly less for your electrons to cover the same distance.

Lexus also has other benefits to offer the UX 300e buyer, including the Encore Platinum service and free battery recharging. And the UX 300e comes very well equipped, even at entry level.
