Today I will be showing you the progress of the Oncidium Sharry Baby that I potted into mainly sphagnum moss and some bark (for aeration). I will also show you two more Sharry Baby plants in different setups. One is in all Coco Husk and the other is in mainly fine bark with some moss. All three of these were once a single plant. While repotting the "mother plant" - the one I repotted in January, she fell apart, and thus became three. And for those who stay until the end, I have a surprise for you!
The Sharry Baby in all Coco Husk is actually a back bulb that I decided to stick in a small pot with a little moss "just to see". To my surprise it produced a new growth about 2 months after being set on that moss. I then potted her in bark/moss mix in 04/20/20, where she grew her last pseudobulb. Recently, on 01/01/2021, I moved her to the Coco Husk set up as she was producing a new growth and I knew the new root system was not far behind. As you can see, she is creating roots from the previous growth and there are some on the newest growth as well.
The larger of the "babies" has only produced two new growths. The first was much smaller than the rest, which is expected in sympodial due to disturbance. Her latest bulb to mature is larger that the previous and is now shooting out a new growth of her own. Roots are starting to show in the outer portion of the pot, which usually indicates roots in the middle as well. I potted her in the mostly bark some moss mix 06/01/2021.
The two new growths on both divisions are at about the same point in development so it will be interesting to see if one out performs the other. Both receive the same lighting, humidity and air flow.
The mother Sharry Baby, was a sulking orchid for about 5 weeks. She is now starting to develop the two new growths she had at the time of repot and another growth from an older pseudobulb, which is progressing much quicker and is closer to the other new growths. However, Momma gets slightly different ligh as she is about 1 foot from an East facing window, not under a grow light. I do not think that the lighting is that different as to not still be able to compare with the other two in order to see if one media mix works better than another for me in my Denver, Colorado home growing conditions.
As all of these Oncidium Sharry Baby were repotted around the same time, and all receive the same environmental conditions and care, I will be tracking their progress this growing season and will do monthly updates to see their progression. My goal is for one of them to bloom so I can say I have not only seen the blooms, but smelled the Chocolate Orchid!!!
