Silverton, CO Adventure Wedding - 13K hike to Lake Sloan below American Basin Peak

What had no idea what we had signed up for before we landed at the base of American Basin. The hike to Sloan Lake in Silverton, CO has an elevation gain of 1,800 feet, which means that the trail ascends from an elevation of about 10,500 feet at the trailhead to an elevation of 12,300 feet at Sloan Lake. This poses some challenges, particularly for those who are not acclimated to the altitude, like Katie & I weren't!

Tips for hiking this trail!

At higher altitudes, the air pressure is lower and can cause some people to experience symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. These symptoms can be particularly challenging for hikers who are carrying a heavy backpack full of camera gear.

In addition to the physical challenges of altitude, the trail to Sloan Lake is also relatively steep, with several switchbacks along the way. This means that hikers will need to exert a significant amount of effort to climb the trail, particularly if they are not accustomed to hiking at high altitudes.

To overcome these challenges, it's important to take frequent breaks, drink plenty of water, and breathe deeply to increase oxygen intake. It's also a good idea to acclimate to the altitude by spending a day or two at a similar altitude before beginning the hike, particularly for those who are not accustomed to hiking at high altitudes.

We would do this all over again for these 2 genuine souls. Mike & Anne were stunning inside and out and the fact that over 40 people made it to the top was unbelievable!
