The 9AM departure on the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad often has 15 cars, an easy pull for a K-37 on level track, but climbing the grade from Hermosa to Rockwood necessitates adding another engine at Hermosa. K-36 482 ran as light power to Hermosa and then couples onto K-37 493.
Because of the weight of the K-36’s and K-37, double heading isn’t allowed on the Animas River Bridge or the Tefft Bridge. 482 will uncouple at Rockwood and be joined by 493 past the Tefft Bridge for the remainder of the journey to Silverton.
