In recent years, U.S. trade policy has undergone a dramatic shift, with the Trump administration’s aggressive use of tariffs’ sparking intense debate across political, economic and legal spheres. Supporters argue that tariffs protect American industries and jobs and will help rebalance asymmetric trading relationships, while critics warn of rising prices, strained international relations and long-term economic costs.
Romain Wacziarg, professor of economics and faculty director of the Center for Global Management, offered opening remarks on the Trump administration’s trade policy. He was joined by Professor Kimberly Clausing, economist and holder of the Eric M. Zolt Chair in Tax Law and Policy at UCLA School of Law, who provided a critical perspective on the policy’s economic and legal implications. Together, they engaged in a dynamic and balanced discussion on the future of U.S. trade policy, the role of tariffs in a globalized economy and the legal complexities that underpin international commerce.
This interactive forum offered attendees an opportunity to hear both sides of the debate and explore the real-world impacts of tariff policy on global business and legal systems — while also considering the broader consequences of protectionist strategies in today’s interconnected world.
