On April 16, 1746, the Battle of Culloden was fought atop Drummossie Moor near Inverness. A well-equipped Hanoverian army, commanded by the Duke of Cumberland, decisively defeated the considerably smaller force led by Lord John Murray and the distrusted leader, Prince Charles Edward Stuart. This marked Bonnie Prince Charlie's ultimate attempt against the English and stands as the bloodiest encounter among all Jacobite battles. Importantly, it also served as the final battle fought on British soil.
