In this video, we take a look at the Hawker Tempest, a late World War II fighter, fighter-bomber, and/or ground attacker from Britain. We first talk about Hawker's line of fighters in the war, going from the Hurricane to the Tornado to the Typhoon to, finally, the Tempest, and how they sat in the shadow of the Supermarine Spitfire. We talk about the troublesome development of the Typhoon and how its initial poor and later solid (but lacking in one specific area) performance led to an effort to improve it, which led to the Tempest.
We talk about how the Tempest design, initially just called the Typhoon II, attempted to improve the Typhoon's high-altitude performance and make it an interceptor. We talk about the evolution of the design, how it became the Tempest, how it was influenced by Germany's Focke-Wulf Fw 190, and how the Tempest failed to become an interceptor, but succeeded in becoming a better version of the Typhoon. We end by talking about the Tempest's success against German superweapons, like the V-1 rocket and the He 162 and Me 262 jet fighters.
