How to start begonias from seeds.
December and January are the best time to start begonias from seeds as they take very long time to grow. Fresh seeds will germinate best. Please handle begonia seeds with care as they are so tiny like dust. Once you drop them on the floor, you wouldn't be able to find them!
You can use your own saved seeds to produce new plants. It's easy and will save you £££. Just be patient as it will take time.
How to do it
Put compost mixed with perlite in seed tray or pot. I used a recycled plastic tray.
Gently firm the compost by using the bottom of a plastic pot
Spray the compost with warm water
Sow seeds thinly and evenly
Again spray it with warm water
Don't cover seeds with compost as they are so small and need light to germinate
Cover seed tray or plastic pot with clear plastic bag
Keep it somewhere bright and warm. I kept mine under the radiator It took only 10 days to germinate. It may take longer, don't give up.
Once they germinated, give young seedlings plenty of light and warmth. I put mine on the windowsill.
When they are big enough, you can transfer them to individual pots or seed trays.
When all dangers of frost have passed, you can plant your begonias in the garden.
Keep watering and feeding and your begonias will bloom nonstop till hard frost.
By end of summer, you can collect begonia seeds to sow for next year.
Repeat this cycle, you will have free plants for as long as you like.
Thanks for watching
Happy gardening!
