Rule 8: ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR TRAUMA. If we do not acknowledge traumatic stress symptoms, we miss an opportunity to optimize recovery. Psychologists are increasingly recognizing that stress disorders can occur following any event, including those that happen within us, like stroke. A traumatic event is any experience that involves the threat of death or serious injury, particularly when sudden or unexpected, that results in intense fear or feelings of helplessness.
