HAPPY PRIDE! As LGBTQ+ Pride month is upon us, I will try to have at least one Pride-themed clip uploaded each week. Starting off with the song that has probably been played at Pride festivals more than anything else- "Smalltown Boy". The original was done by Bronski Beat more than 40 years ago, and that song has been attached to my soul (and dancing shoes) ever since. And I'm not alone, considering it's been a staple at bars, parties, concerts, and more all these years. This version by Boy George was recorded to celebrate the song's 40th last year and was the opening number for nearly all of his 2024 tour dates across the USA. I've stripped it down to just his (highly processed) voice and the drums to create this "Beat-Boy Mix", a play on words- or a tribute to Bronski Beat. The words are the most important part of the song and tell the story of a gay boy kicked out of his smalltown home to make it on his own in the big city. As sad of a reality then as it is today, as statistically speaking, there are more homeless LGBTQ+ youth than heterosexual ones.
