Dr. Cynthia Idhigu Aghogho, Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences at Auburn University, is a plant breeder whose work connects participatory evaluation, sensory science, and predictive breeding. Drawing on research conducted during her time at IITA, she presents how the tricot approach—traditionally used for farmer assessments—was adapted to capture consumer preferences for cassava quality traits. This webinar highlights how consumers ranked cassava genotypes based on colour and texture, how these rankings compared with conventional hedonic scales, and how they were linked to biophysical and sensory measurements. The study demonstrates the efficiency of tricot for consumer preference mapping and shows how rank-based data can feed into predictive models that support more consumer-centric, socially responsive cassava breeding.
