College Spotlight: Baylor University

Jodi Glou, President of Custom College Consulting, recently visited Baylor University in Waco, Texas, gaining fresh insights into one of the nation’s oldest and most respected Christian institutions.

Founded in 1845 by Judge Baylor and moved to Waco in 1884, Baylor is home to over 16,000 undergraduate students and is proudly affiliated with the Baptist Church. All students are required to complete two religion courses: Christian Heritage and Christian Scriptures, underscoring Baylor’s commitment to its faith-based values.

Students reside in either split-gender or single-sex dorms, with approximately seven Living-Learning Centers available. While freshman housing is required, most students move off campus by sophomore year.

Baylor’s Honors College is a standout, along with nine pre-health majors and over 200 student clubs. Approximately 35% of the student body participates in Greek life, although there is no on-campus Greek housing available. Students are allowed to bring cars to campus all four years, offering extra flexibility.

Athletics and school spirit are alive and well with the beloved Bear mascot and a 45,000-seat football stadium that energizes the campus on game day. Baylor also provides a comprehensive scholarship website featuring awards from across the university.
