I profile traveling to Earth Quake McGoon’s crash site in northern Laos near the Vietnam Border. American James McGovern – aka Earthquake McGoon - the legendary World War Two pilot and later an aviator with the Central Intelligence Agency’s (CIA) airline, Civil Air Transport, CAT, who was shot over Dien Bien Phu Vietnam during the First Indochina War (French versus Viet Minh) supplying the beleaguered French on the last air resupply mission to the fort. He nursed his airplane another 75 miles, crashing just across the border into a very remote section – even today – of Laos. A half century after the crash, he and his copilot Wallace Bufords crash site quite by accident was found, no one was even looking for them, and other than a U.S. POW/MIA Team visit, no westerner has ever visited the site.
