Kuk Sool Kwan Hapkido Wrestling Techniques: Jop Ah Chi Ki 1-20

These Jop Ah Chi Ki (잡아치기) techniques are based in wrestling and groundfighting, but with a different approach to grappling than the hapkido curriculum so far. The 20 techniques of this set are part of the 80 or so total techniques of various sets including Koh Geup Sohn Mohk Soo, etc that a 1st degree black belt must study on the way to becoming a 2nd degree black belt in Kuk Sool Kwan Hapkido.

The techniques were taught in the 1990s by Grandmaster Huh Mon Gil, predating the rise of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Techniques 11-20 are specifically "ne waza" or groundfighting techniques, and many of them would be illegal in BJJ competition because they make use of cervical locks, wrist locks, or fishhooks. Therefore, the techniques are studied as a self defense response to groundfighting instead of as sport.

Although there are earlier groundfighting sets introduced into the Kuk Sool Kwan underbelt training regimen before these 20 1st degree black belt techniques, such as the Ki Bon Jahp Ki 기본잡기, the Wah Ki 와기 (   • Kuk Sool Kwan Hapkido Ground Defense Grapp...  ), or the Yohk Soo 욕수 (   • Kuk Sool Kwan Hapkido Mount Defense Ground...  ), one might wonder why these wrestling techniques are introduced so late. The answer is that while wrestling is much, much easier than hapkido or judo, wrestling techniques approached with a knowledge of hapki principles (you won hwa) work better. The thinking is that learning wrestling first, however, creates mental shortcuts that prevent one from grasping hapki more deeply. Wrestling can work by means of strength and size, whereas hapkido cannot.

The Jop Ah Chi Ki (잡아치기) techniques are part of the curriculum for 1st degree black belt in Kuk Sool Kwan, as taught by the Huh Mon Gil branch at Ancient Arts Hapkido in Irvine, California. The techniques are offered first in fast motion and then in a slow motion with footnotes to guide their proper execution.

Kuk Sool was founded in 1958 when the Kuk Sool Hwe first gathered. The Kuk Sool Hwe was a potluck of many martial arts masters who met in an attempt to preserve and share native Korean martial arts material including hapkido and various forms of kung fu. From the techniques shared there, Kuk Sool Won was registered in 1961 and Kuk Sool Kwan was registered in 1962. Kim Woo Tak is the doju of Kuk Sool Kwan.

At the time this video was recorded, Grandmaster Michael Dunchok was a 7th dan in the Kuk Sool Kwan and a 7th dan in the Korea Hapkido Federation. Grandmaster Huh Mon Gil, the founder of Kyeok Too Ki and of Korean Special Forces martial arts in 1974 (Teuk Gong Moo Sool), is his teacher.
