The Gondeshwar Temple in Sinnar was built in the 11th-12th century, and according to local tradition, it was commissioned by the Gavli chieftain Rav Singuni's son, Rav Govinda. It is an example of the Hemadpanthi architectural style, constructed entirely from black basalt stone, and features a panchayatana plan with a main shrine to Shiva surrounded by four subsidiary shrines.
Construction: Built during the 11th-12th centuries.
Architectural style: Features the Hemadpanthi style.
Material: Constructed entirely of black basalt stone.
Plan: The temple has a panchayatana (five-shrines) plan, which includes a central shrine dedicated to Shiva and four subsidiary shrines for Surya, Vishnu, Parvati, and Ganesha.
Historical context: Sinnar is believed to be the ancient town of Seuna-pura, established by the Yadava king Seuna-chandra. Local legend attributes the temple's construction to the son of a local chieftain, Rav Govinda.
Based on research (Chandra 1975), Gondeshwar Temple, one of the well-known temples in Maharashtra, was built in the Bhumija style. The internal layout of Bhumija temples generally consists of three interlinked spaces: the sanctum (garbhagriha), a vestibule (antarala), and a pavilion (mandapa).
