In this video, we take a look at two pre-World War II German heavy fighter designs from Arado, in the E.500 and the E.561. We first refresh on the rise of the heavy fighter, what countries expected them to do, and how the concept ultimately did not live up to those lofty expectations. We talk about what heavy fighters, on average, were good at, and how that still made them valuable. We then move to Arado's design proposals in the mid-to-late 1930's.
We talk about Arado as a company, how they were known for both very simple aircraft and very technologically advanced aircraft, and how their design proposals are ripe with strange concepts. We talk about the E.500's strange features, from its split tail to its 20mm turrets, and how these caused their failure. We then talk about a follow-up proposal in the E.561, and how its unconventional engine setup also led to its failure. We end by talking about the nature of technological progress, and how failure is far more common than success.
