June 24, 1943: American Military Police tried to arrest Black soldiers from the 1511th Quartermaster Truck Regiment for drinking in a pub in Bamber Bridge, England. British civilians intervened—physically blocking MPs and sheltering soldiers. What followed was a gunfight that lasted hours. One Black soldier died. Dozens wounded. The U.S. military covered it up for 50 years. The people of Bamber Bridge had put up signs: "Black Troops Only"—choosing solidarity over segregation. This is the Battle of Bamber Bridge: when a small English village fought American Military Police to defend Black GIs.
