Heavenly Horsemen

When you think of heavenly horsemen in the bible, you generally think of the four horsemen. These riders are simple to describe (as is shown by the fact that a mere 8 verses are given about them), but they are also somewhat difficult to explain. They have inspired art, new eschatologies, and a plethora of commentaries. But the idea of horsemen from heaven is not a new one. While the origins of the motif are unclear, much of biblical literature speaks to a long-standing tradition of divine equestrians. Today, we will explore the references and describe how these riders found their way into Jewish tradition and why as we discuss the heavenly horsemen.
