Two years ago, I stood outside Enver Hoxha’s private villa in Tirana — the home of Albania’s dictator for four decades — and I couldn’t get anywhere near it. The gates were locked, the house was sealed, and the whole place felt like a forbidden relic.
This week… I walked straight inside.
Not once.
Not twice.
Three times.
In this video, I explore the surreal story of how I accidentally gained access to one of the most secretive houses in Europe, now partially reopened as an art space. Along the way, we dive into the history of Enver Hoxha, his isolationist regime, the bunkerisation of Albania, the suppression of intellectuals, and the incredible irony that artists now live and work inside his former home.
We also look at how the Blokku — once reserved for the communist elite — has transformed into one of Tirana’s trendiest neighbourhoods.
This is a story about history, irony, and the strange moments travel throws at you when you least expect it.
