The nerves involved in the lower limb joints include the tibial nerve, common fibular (peroneal) nerve, and their branches. These nerves, originating from the sciatic nerve, innervate the knee joint, along with branches from the femoral nerve. The sural nerve, formed by branches of the tibial and common fibular nerves, also contributes to sensation in the lower leg and foot.
Specific Nerves and Their Roles:
Tibial Nerve:
A major branch of the sciatic nerve, innervating the posterior compartment muscles of the leg (e.g., gastrocnemius, soleus) and providing sensation to the sole of the foot and posterior leg.
Common Fibular (Peroneal) Nerve:
Also a branch of the sciatic nerve, it splits into the superficial and deep fibular nerves. The superficial fibular nerve innervates the side of the leg and the dorsum of the foot, while the deep fibular nerve innervates the anterior compartment of the leg and the skin of the toes.
Femoral Nerve:
Innervates the quadriceps muscles, which are important for extending the knee, and provides sensation to the anterior and lateral thigh.
Obturator Nerve:
Supplies the adductor muscles of the thigh, which are involved in bringing the thigh towards the midline.
Sciatic Nerve:
The main nerve of the lower limb, its branches (tibial and common fibular nerves) provide both motor and sensory innervation to the lower leg, foot, and knee joint.
Sural Nerve:
A sensory nerve that provides sensation to the lateral aspect of the lower leg and foot.
Genicular Nerves:
Branches of the tibial and common fibular nerves that innervate the knee joint itself.
Key Points:
The sciatic nerve is a major nerve in the lower limb, branching into the tibial and common fibular nerves.
The tibial and common fibular nerves provide both motor and sensory innervation to the lower leg and foot.
The femoral nerve is responsible for knee extension and sensation in the anterior thigh.
The obturator nerve innervates the adductor muscles of the thigh.
The sural nerve provides sensation to the lateral aspect of the lower leg and foot.
