It was Sammy’s day to look after little John Joe, but Sammy wasn’t in the mood for babysitting. He wanted to play with his friend Willie Brennan instead 🎮👦. So, instead of taking John Joe along, Sammy slipped away with Splinter the dog, leaving John Joe behind 😢.

Mary, annoyed that it wasn’t her turn to mind him, still took John Joe by the hand and went searching for Sammy. Their steps led them to the Brennans’ farmyard, where John Joe came face-to-face with something unexpected—the Brennans’ HUGE, clucking hen 🐓.

John Joe wasn’t used to such a big bird. He worried it might peck at him or even try to eat him! Scared and flustered, he scrambled up onto a wall, shouting for Mary, Mrs. Brennan, and even his mammy, but no one came. Finally, John Joe ran off and hid deep in the cornfield 🌽, trying to get away from the hen’s watchful eyes.

Back at the yard, Sammy, Mary, and Splinter began to panic when they realized John Joe was missing. That’s when clever Splinter sniffed the ground, darted into the corn, and barked until, at last, they found John Joe fast asleep in the stalks 🐕👃. Everyone was so relieved and overjoyed to see him safe again ❤️.
