Building Bandai’s 1/72 Y-Wing: Epic Detail & Engine Lighting!

What’s up, Plastic Addicts? Today on Jason’s Space Dock, we’re diving into Bandai’s 1/72 Y-Wing Starfighter — a standout kit that captures the rugged, battle-worn look of the original ILM models. In this build, I explore every step: from unboxing and preliminary assembly to wiring, LED engine lighting, and custom weathering.

We take a close look at Bandai’s incredible engineering, with crisp panel lines, intricate piping, and modular sprues that make planning the build a joy. I also break from the standard paint guide on the rear of the ship, highlighting the exposed structure with copper tones to give a strong, industrial feel — perfect for a decommissioned Y-Wing.

Along the way, I detail the pilot, cockpit, aft fuselage piping, and R2 unit, plus I experiment with washes, dry brushing, and pastels to bring out that battle-worn personality. The custom 3D-printed engine nozzles and careful wiring create a cinematic glow that truly makes the engines pop.
