India had long dominated as the largest source of raw cotton for Bangladesh's textile industry. However, Brazil lost that position in the 2024-25 marketing year and has now become Bangladesh's top cotton supplier. This information has emerged in the report of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Bangladesh imported a total of 8.28 million bales of cotton in the 2024-25 marketing year—a 5.2% increase over the previous year, the report said. Of this, Brazil supplied 1.9 million bales or about 25% market share. India, on the other hand, dropped to second place—supplying 1.4 million bales (15%). A year ago also India was at the top with 23% market share.

According to the USDA, this change in cotton imports comes at a time when the interim government took over in August 2024 after the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government and political changes in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh is the second largest exporter of ready-made garments in the world. The sector contributes more than 80% of the country's total export earnings and about 10% of the GDP.
