Overview of the Tesla Lithium Battery Module We are Installing in our RV - EV Battery Hack!

This battery is a 24V LiPo used in Tesla model S cars. We salvaged this battery to use in our RV in place of the existing 12V lead acid batteries. In this video I give you an overview of this battery in particular before we install it in the coach.

The tesla modle S battery systyem consists of 16 individual modules. Each of these modules are 27 inches by 11.5” by 3.5” in dimensions and weight 55 lbs. We are planning to use this one module in our RV, but can easily expand to additional modules. The modules consist of 444 individual 18650 battery cells with 74 in parallel in each cell and 6 in series.

The battery cells are nominally 3200 mAh capacity and nominal 3.6Vdc. This gives the pack a total capacity of 5115 watt hours and a nominal module voltage of 21.6 Volts. The modules are designed to produce up to 1155 amps of current for brief periods.

In the video we talk about temperature limitations of the battery, and basic BMS requirements to make them safe. In future video when we install this I will walk you through what we installed for a BMS (Battery Management System)
