This video shows a live recovery training exercise in the Sahel where a Casspir (6x6) recovery vehicle extracts an OTT Puma 4x4 armored vehicle stuck in sand using a tow strap. During repetitive pulls the tow strap began to show damage and risked ripping, so the team replaced it later in the mission with a safer solution to prevent strap failure and danger to personnel.
Trainees coordinate the recovery with hand signals and visual communication. Ideally, radios and full PPE should be used for safety. When radios or PPE are not available, keep all personnel clear of the danger zone and maintain direct visual contact with both vehicles and drivers.
This exercise emphasizes safe recovery technique, risk recognition, and team communication — critical skills for UN peacekeeping and pre-deployment operations in challenging terrain.
