The Olympic season 2013/14 was the last time when Vika and Nikita skated apart: that season Elena Ilyinykh/Katsalapov and Sinitsina /Ruslan Zhiganshin fought with each other for the title of the second pair of the country. Nikita and Ilyinykh turned out to be higher at all the starts, moreover: after the Sochi Games, their pair was considered the main favorites of the new cycle. But almost immediately after the 2014 World Cup, the Ilyin duo/Katsalapov ceased to exist.
"Nikita came up to me at the medical examination, thanked me for the cooperation and said that he would not perform with me anymore. The initiative to break up our couple came from him, I would like to emphasize this in particular," Ilinykh recalled.
