From record-speed expressways to viral pothole clips—this deep dive asks: what’s the real report card of Nitin Gadkari’s road & highways push? We unpack recent collapses, the E20 fuel debate, and conflict-of-interest allegations—along with the minister’s responses.
First, accidents & collapses: In the past five years, the government acknowledged 55 cases of collapses or damage on NHAI roads, bridges and tunnels (40 during construction, 15 after completion). Gadkari said accountability will follow investigations and offenders won’t be spared. In Kerala, stretches of NH-66 failed; NHAI suspended officials/engineers and debarred contractors after design faults were admitted, with IIT-led reviews ordered.
The Silkyara (Uttarkashi) tunnel collapse—part of the Char Dham programme under NHIDCL—trapped 41 workers in Nov 2023; all were rescued. Action against erring parties was tied to an expert committee’s report, per the minister and official releases.
Now the E20 fuel controversy: India’s shift to 20% ethanol-blended petrol sparked concerns about older vehicles’ mileage and parts wear. Automakers and the government say E20 is safe, though 2–4% mileage drops are possible; warranties/insurance remain valid. Gadkari has dismissed the backlash as a political campaign.
On politics & ethics, the Congress alleged a conflict of interest—claiming ethanol-linked firms associated with Gadkari’s family benefited from the policy push. The BJP and Gadkari deny wrongdoing, calling it a smear.
Supporters credit the ministry with compressing travel times and scaling greenfield corridors; Gadkari even claimed Indian roads will be “like America’s” within two years—an ambition critics juxtapose with recurring quality issues and state-level complaints.
This video separates claim from fact: What failed? What improved? Who’s responsible—contractors, consultants, or oversight? And what does E20 actually mean for your car and wallet? Watch till the end for data, timelines, and on-record responses from both sides.
