Title: Harvard Man
Date: August 2000
Location: Toronto, Canada
"Buffy The Vampire Slayer"s SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR is making a stake on the film industry by starring in JAMES TOBACK's new film, "Harvard Man".
Gellar plays Cindy, the mischievous daughter of a mob boss, who gets her Harvard college boyfriend Alan (ADRIAN GRENIER) mixed up in sports betting and game rigging.
However, unbeknownst to Cindy and Alan, they are being watched by two undercover FBI agents, a boyfriend-girlfriend team (played by ERIC STOLTZ and REBECCA GAYHEART) who are not so concerned with the youngsters' petty crimes aswith Cindy's father.
Played out against a background of love, crime and basketball, the film follows Alan - the Harvard Man of the title - as he's faced with one alien situation after another.
James Toback also used a college setting in his critically acclaimed film 'Black and White' last year - but its good reviews failed to stop the film flopping at the box office.
The film was praised for its accurate portrayal of college teenagers - something missing from most other teen dramas. It seems he is sticking to the same style with "Harvard Man".
APTN went behind the scenes of the film to join Stoltz, Gellar, Gayheart, Grenier and Toback as they filmed a variety of scenes in Toronto.
The low draw of 'Black and White' is unlikely to be repeated with Sarah Michelle Gellar in the hotseat. There are high hopes that she will become a major star of the silver screen as her television character "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" continues to pull in massive ratings all around the world.
Her influence is so great in the world of showbiz that it was her involvement in Toback's college flick that clinched the support of financial backers.
Although she has starred in a handful of feature films including "I Know What You Did Last Summer", and "Scream 2", Gellar has yet to carry a film on her own - a feat which she hopes will be accomplished with this production.
'Harvard Man' is released in America and Canada next spring.
