Introducing the TOM technique
In this video, the TOM stroke is introduced. This technique basically produces the bass sound in Tombak.
When playing the TOM technique, pay attention to the following:
Keep 4 fingers of the lower hand next to each other (attached) and leave the thumb next to your hand, but don’t press the fingers.
Make an arc with your palm and bend the fingers, in a way that if you look at your hand side ways, it should look like a question mark. In other words imagine that you’re holding water in your hand.
When you create the shape explained above with your hand, your 4 fingers should become aligned
in one line.
Use your finger tips and strike toward the center of the drumhead.
Use the force from your wrist in a straight direction and not your forearm.
Strike the TOM and bounce back to the same position. Don’t leave it on the drumhead and let the sound resonate this way.
Practice this technique with various rhythmic patterns you wish in order to perfect the sound of it and practice creativity at the same time.
Make sure you start with a slower speed and gradually make it faster.
Make sure to cut your finger nails short.
Good Luck
