This training video is designed to build empathy, challenge misconceptions, and promote more compassionate care for people affected by tuberculosis (TB). It is intended for use in health worker and student training sessions to help address stigma within health facilities.
The video demonstrates how stigma—more than knowledge gaps alone—can delay diagnosis, interrupt treatment, and contribute to continued TB transmission. Using a combination of survivor quotes, dramatised scenes, and narration, the video explores three major forms of TB-related stigma:
Internalised stigma, where individuals feel shame or blame themselves for having TB
Anticipated stigma, where fear of judgment or gossip discourages people from seeking care or disclosing their diagnosis
Enacted stigma, which includes discriminatory treatment or negative attitudes from healthcare workers
A simulated walk through a health facility highlights subtle and overt ways stigma can manifest, such as isolating patients, abrupt communication, or visible signage that separates TB patients from others.
The video closes with reflections from TB survivors, who describe the powerful impact of being treated with empathy, respect, and understanding. These positive interactions with healthcare workers helped them complete their treatment and feel less isolated.
This video is a practical tool to spark discussion and reflection among healthcare workers and students. It encourages behaviour change and helps build safer, more inclusive spaces for people affected by TB.
