After a maintenance explosion traps them, Harold Vex, a human engineer, saves Empress Malina of the Varakian Empire from certain death. An accidental drop of Harold’s sweat on Malina’s lips triggers a revolutionary biochemical awakening in the Empress, whose species has been genetically suppressed for generations to ensure compliance. Suddenly flooded with long-dormant adrenaline and emotion, Malina realizes her entire life has been a "Grey Stagnation" enforced by her advisors.
As a Purist coup led by Lord Vorian erupts, the Empress refuses to return to her numbed existence, choosing instead to "wake up" and fight. Together, the human engineer and the newly fierce Empress must navigate treacherous maintenance tunnels and fungal gardens to survive the rebellion. Through Harold's mammalian heat and chaotic influence, Malina learns that being truly alive is more dangerous—and more glorious—than any throne.
