The luxury SUV careened wildly down the mountain road, brakes screaming uselessly as it hurtled toward the cliff edge. Dylan Porter didn't think—he just yanked his battered maintenance truck sideways, creating a barrier between certain death and the terrified woman behind the wheel. Metal shrieked against metal as the vehicles collided, finally grinding to a stop mere feet from the thousand-foot drop.
As Dylan stumbled from his truck to check on the driver, he froze. The woman climbing shakily from the SUV, three frightened kids clutching her designer coat, wore a face he'd spent six years trying to forget. More shocking still—around her neck hung a silver locket he'd recognize anywhere. The same locket his wife had been wearing the night she walked out on him and their newborn daughter without explanation.

The alarm clock's harsh beep shattered the pre-dawn silence at 4:30 AM. Dylan Porter's hand shot out from under the thin blanket, silencing it before the sound could wake his daughter. At 38, his body protested the uncomfortable pullout couch that served as his bed, his back stiff from another night of restless sleep. The small two-bedroom apartment in Brookhaven wasn't much, but the second bedroom belonged entirely to seven-year-old Emma, and that was all that mattered.
Dylan swung his legs onto the cold linoleum floor and rubbed his face, feeling the stubble that had grown overnight. Another day, another early start. He moved quietly through the cramped kitchen, starting the coffee maker before heading to the tiny bathroom for a quick shower. By 5:15, he was dressed in his janitorial uniform, the navy blue shirt with "Brookhaven Medical Center" embroidered on the pocket, and preparing breakfast.
The smell of pancakes finally drew Emma from her room. She appeared in the doorway, her blonde hair tangled from sleep, dragging her favorite stuffed rabbit by one ear. Her pajamas were slightly too small—Dylan made a mental note to buy new ones when his next paycheck came.
"Morning, Daddy," she yawned, climbing onto one of the mismatched kitchen chairs.
"Good morning, sunshine," Dylan replied, his tired face brightening instantly. He flipped a pancake onto her plate, arranging blueberries into a smiley face the way he did every morning. "Big day at school today?"
Emma nodded enthusiastically. "We're doing art projects. Mrs. Patterson says we can draw anything we want."
