A glimpse of Omaha Beach on the 80th anniversary of D-Day. The calm before the storm...
The Allied landing on Omaha Beach was one of the most difficult and bloodiest episodes of Operation D-Day, which began on June 6, 1944. The beach was attacked primarily by American units, including the experienced 1st Infantry Division (Big Red One) and the 29th Division, which had not yet seen combat. Casualties on Omaha Beach were the highest of all five D-Day landing beaches, reaching approximately 2,400 killed and wounded.
Although the landing at Omaha almost ended in disaster, thanks to the enormous courage and determination of the soldiers, the beachhead was maintained, which was crucial to the success of the entire Allied invasion of Normandy. The capture of Omaha Beach paved the way for the further liberation of German-occupied Western Europe.
