‘Bold’, ‘Big Head’ and ‘Bear-like’ are 3 linocut prints by artist Keiran Speedy.
Linocut prints are created from a process of carving a design into a block of lino, rolling ink onto the surface, laying paper or fabric on top, and then applying pressure to produce a print. Each of Speedy’s artworks have been printed in black ink on paper that has at first been coloured with chalk paste. Each print is within a white border and features an Australian animal in their natural environment.
The first print, in portrait orientation, is 12.5 centimetres wide by 18 centimetres high and is titled ‘Bold’.
An eagle soars upwards with outstretched wings, occupying the upper two thirds of the image. They are silhouetted against a very light blue sky.
The lower third depicts several curling and swirling lines making visual the energetic movement of the wind as if the eagle is soaring, uplifted by a strong draft.
The second print, in landscape orientation is 18 centimetres wide by 12.5 centimetres high and is titled ‘Big Head’.
The head of a seal in the lower left quarter of the print bobs up for air from the ocean. The seal looks directly at the viewer. They are close. The water is depicted by broken lines and ripples emanating out from the seal’s head in concentric circles. These lines tell us about the swirling movement of the water’s surface, while the seal’s doe eyes are wide to see as much as they can. Fine lines reflect the seal’s slick and streamlined fur.
The third print, in landscape orientation is 18 centimetres wide by 12.5 centimetres high and is titled ‘Bear-like’. It features 2 wombats peacefully together in a grassy landscape. The wombat on the left, is the larger of the two, and looks to the smaller wombat on the right, who meets their gaze.
The artists signature can be seen outside the printed area in the bottom right-hand corner.
