The Tungna is a Nepali Himalayan plucked string instrument (lute) traditionally played by ethnic groups such as the Sherpa, Tamang, Hyolmo, and Tibetan communities. In Sherpa and Tibetan cultures, the Tungna is also referred to as Dramyin or Dhamyen. It typically features six strings, arranged in pairs of three pitched strings, although some variants may have four strings arranged in pairs of four pitched strings. Originally, the strings of the Tungna were crafted from sheep or goat guts, but modern versions often utilize nylon strings. The headstock of the Tungna is intricately crafted with designs depicting various animals, both real and mythical, such as dragons, horses, birds, and garudas.
Yubaraj Lama is among the few Nepali Tungna makers based in Kathmandu, originally from the Sindhupalchowk district.
