The 1918 flu pandemic decimated Native communities across the country. In response, the Ojibwe people created the jingle dress dance for healing and hope. Now, during a new pandemic, Montana-based powwow dancer Rose Bear Don’t Walk shows us how the dance continues.

As part of POP-UP MAGAZINE’S Spring Issue: At Home, we reached out to dancers across North America to interpret this moment through one minute of dance. Their work gives movement to distance, to stillness, and to hope.

Spring Issue: At Home is an hour filled with awkward parties, office comedy, terrifying bus rides, high school dreams, young doctors, houseplant confessions, and more. Storytellers and musicians perform from their homes across the country in an all-new lineup of true stories alongside an original score, art, animation, and film. Watch the full Spring Issue at https://bit.ly/2Y1zydz.

POP-UP MAGAZINE produces unforgettable stories and live experiences, including our acclaimed live magazine that sells out grand, historic venues across North America. While the touring show is on pause, POP-UP MAGAZINE has moved online with stories we love from the archive, all new issues, and more. All with support from Google. Subscribe to our channel (https://bit.ly/pumsubscribe) for the latest stories. More at http://popupmagazine.com.

ROSE BEAR DON’T WALK has been powwow dancing all her life. A member of the Bitterroot Salish and Crow tribes of Montana, Rose lives on the Flathead Indian Reservation, where she currently works as an ethnobotanist. In 2019, she received a Fellowship for the Future from 500 Women Scientists to further her study of traditional Salish food plants. More at   / rosedontwalk
