Finding parts of the Southern off road challenge in Ocala National Forest

Spending New Years Day in South East Ocala.
Today we took our annual January 1st Jeep ride. We journeyed into Ocala national Forest in search of some of the places used by Southern off roads four-wheel-drive challenge and triathlon back in the mid-90s. We headed out from Altoona and went east to the southern entrance. From there we traveled around through trails until we reached the Alexander springs area. It’s been a long time since I’ve been down this road to get to freak creek. This was the launching area for the canoeing portion of the challenge.

IN REGARDS TO HUNTERS IN THE FOREST:
It is always good to not ride trails in the morning during hunting season. We started at about 1115 and by the time we ran into any hunters they had already finished up their hunt gathered around their trucks and kenneled their dogs. I’m sure they were sharing stories of this season’s hunts. As Jeepers we share the forest and should give hunters all the space that they need during the season. It is a good practice to quietly go through the woods. Always stay on approved roads. Don’t get out and walk around, don’t make a bunch of noise, and always wave and be polite. Avenza maps will show you what the approved roads are. GAIA May show you the roads but that may not be roads that the forestry service allows people on during certain times of the year. I tried to launch the drone but on each occasion I was in a very restricted airspace and only able to go about 75 feet up and 100 feet out. We had water crossings some sugar sand and some beautiful trails.
