Michael Sheen really had to learn to use linking rings to be believably clumsy.
You can watch a demonstration of how professional conjurers use this tool in the video (I used parts of the tutorial on the YouTube channel "wandw presents").
It's very likely that Sheen was trained by Pete Firman himself, the magician who played Pat, the employee at Will Goldstone's magic shop in 1941.
