The Gulf Coast Trade Center has been in existence for close to 50 years and is located on FM 1375 just west of New Waverly in the Sam Houston National Forest. The center helps troubled youth complete their high school education and at the same time teaches them a vocation. The teens live on campus. About 1 am Monday morning 16 students in one dorm woke to smoke and fire. They all got out safely but the building was heavily burning when New Waverly Firefighters arrived. Captain Jimmy Williams said at first they started to make entry but then the roof started to collapse. The heavy trussed roof, unlike the lightweight trusses used in homes held for most of the building but the other half they collapsed. A second alarm was pulled bringing Huntsville, Montgomery, and North Montgomery County Fire Departments. With no fire hydrants, water had to be shuttled in from several miles away. It was brought under control close to 230am. There were no injuries. The cause has not yet been determined.
