7800 Fahrenheit - maybe not an album that has aged very well and it shows a band that are not quite sure which direction to go. Even though it’s far from my favorite era of Bon Jovi it’s fun to listen to every now and then. I prefer it over the debut and there are some great playing from Richie.
In And Out Of Love is a big rock song, no doubt about that! Everything about it screams eighties rock and I must say I’m surprised the band has never played it live since the Slippery Tour. It’s a song many casual rock fans would know and it’s no doubt a great live song. It’s also included on all Greatest Hits album so it doesn’t really make sense. I guess Jon simply doesn’t connect with the 7800 album and rather see it dead and buried.
The guitar playing is great and it’s a fun song to play. There are some blues inspiration for sure in the playing, showing a glimpse of Richie’s roots. On the main riff I used an octave effect on the single string notes although I’m quite sure they dubbed it with two different octaves in the studio. The solo is cool but actually quite tricky. It’s all over the fret board and I actually had to work a bit on the ending lick. Other than that a lot of whammy bar which was a big thing during the eighties not only for Richie but rock in general.
