Steps to Check Motor Insulation with an Insulation Tester (Megger):
1. Ensure Safety First:
Turn off the power supply and disconnect the motor from the circuit.
Discharge any stored voltage and use proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
2. Identify Test Points:
Locate the motor terminals (U, V, W for three-phase motors) and the motor body (ground).
3. Select Test Voltage:
For low-voltage motors (up to 600V), use a 500V or 1000V megger.
For high-voltage motors, use a 2500V or 5000V megger (as per manufacturer recommendations).
4. Connect the Insulation Tester:
Connect the positive (L) lead of the tester to the motor winding terminal.
Connect the negative (E or GND) lead to the motor frame (earth/ground).
5. Perform the Insulation Test:
Press the test button and apply voltage for about 1 minute.
Observe the insulation resistance reading in Mega Ohms (MΩ).
6. Interpret the Readings:
Above 100 MΩ – Excellent insulation.
10 MΩ – 100 MΩ – Good insulation.
1 MΩ – 10 MΩ – Moderate, may need attention.
Below 1 MΩ – Poor insulation, repair or replace the motor.
7. Test Between Windings:
Perform the test between U-V, V-W, and W-U to check insulation between phases.
8. Compare with Standards:
Check against IEEE, IEC, or manufacturer guidelines for insulation resistance acceptance values.
9. Reconnect the Motor:
If the insulation is good, discharge the winding and reconnect the motor safely.
10. Log the Readings:
Maintain a record for preventive maintenance and future reference.
