San Francisco is one of the very few cities in the world where both historic streetcars and cable cars are still in daily operation. These vehicles are not only means of transportation, but living symbols of the city’s heritage.
The Cable Car system dates back to the late 19th century and operates using underground moving cables rather than onboard motors. Conductors manually grip the cable to control speed and stopping, allowing the cars to climb San Francisco’s famously steep hills. Today, it remains the world’s only large-scale operating cable car system.
Streetcars on the F Market & Wharves line are electric and consist of beautifully restored vintage vehicles from different cities and eras. Their rounded shapes, classic interiors, and colorful liveries turn Market Street into a moving transportation museum.
Together, streetcars and cable cars connect modern San Francisco with its past. They glide through financial districts, waterfronts, and historic neighborhoods, carrying not only passengers, but also the rhythm and memory of the city itself.
