In this engaging Matholia educational math video, we explore the fundamental concept of measuring length using centimeters, a key metric unit. Understanding how to accurately measure and compare the lengths of objects is a crucial skill that students will utilize throughout their mathematical journey and in real-life situations.
The video begins by introducing a relatable scenario featuring objects commonly found on a student's desk, such as a pen, pencil, paperclip, eraser, and scissors. By using familiar items, the lesson immediately captures the attention of young learners and helps them connect the concept to their everyday experiences.
Using a ruler, we demonstrate how to measure the length of each object, emphasizing the importance of aligning the object with the ruler's zero mark. Through close-up shots and clear explanations, students learn how to read the measurements accurately in centimeters. The video then guides students through the process of arranging the objects in order from shortest to longest, reinforcing the concept of comparing lengths.
This lesson aligns with key curriculum standards for elementary mathematics, covering essential topics such as measurement, metric units, and comparing and ordering objects by their lengths. By providing a visual and interactive learning experience, the video enhances students' understanding of these fundamental concepts.
Incorporating this video into classroom instruction can greatly benefit students by:
Providing a clear, step-by-step demonstration of measuring length using centimeters
Offering a visually engaging way to introduce or reinforce the concept of measurement
Encouraging students to apply their knowledge to real-world objects and situations
Supporting different learning styles through the use of visual aids and practical examples
Facilitating discussion and hands-on activities related to measuring and comparing lengths
The video is part of Matholia's comprehensive online learning resource for K-6 mathematics, which features a wide range of topics and concepts aligned with international curricula. Look things on Sophie's table.
There's a pen, a pencil, a paperclip, an eraser and scissors.
pop or glow highlight
Lets use a ruler to measure the length of each object, then arrange them in order from the shortest to the longest.
Clear away everything to bottom of table
Put down a piece pf paper.
Draw a line down left of page
I'll draw a start line here.
And place the ruler with the 0 mark on the start line.
Let's start with the pencil.
I'll place the end of the pencil on the start line, and check it length.
Zoom right in to see 6 cm
OK, so the pencil has a length of 6 centimeters.
Write on side of paper
What about the paperclip?
repeat animation for paperclip
The paperclip has a length of 3 centimeters.
Write on side of paper
Now the pen.
The pen has a length of 13 centimeters.
Write on side of paper
And now the scissors.
The scissors have a length of 11 centimeters.'
So, arranged from shortest to longest we have the paperclip at 3 centimeters.
The eraser.
The pencil.
The scissors and the pen with a length of 13 centimeters.
