Arctic Wildlife. Long-tailed jaegers are long migratory birds. They breed in the high Arctic and migrate south for wintering to the southern Pacific and Atlantic. They start to breed around June 10 and their hatching time is in early July. There are usually two eggs in a clutch. Long-tailed jaegers feed on insects, hunt lemmings and catch small birds. Birds are territorial and actively and noisily defend their territory from predators and humans
