Alberta Nuclear - Naheed Nenshi and Small Modular Reactors (SMR) in Alberta's Clean Energy Mix

Naheed Nenshi served 3 terms as Mayor of Calgary. His first election, in 2010, was one I was capturing mayoral candidate debates to share on YouTube. (This was before YouTube coverage of such events was commonplace.)

I volunteered to help Nenshi create candidate policy videos, and was impressed by depth he was willing to explore each topic. This was before I was "on board" with the campaign, as I assumed other candidates would create similarly in-depth explanations for their policies.

Nope. No one else did. And so instead of just a one-off volunteer task, I took greater interest in Naheed Nenshi's campaign and stopped considering myself to be a non-partisan. Nenshi did get elected, and IMHO transitioned from being a thoughtful mayoral candidate to a great mayor of Calgary.

I've never sat down with Naheed Nenshi and talked about nuclear power. He is aware I'm keen on the subject, but in 2010 it just wasn't pertinent to being a Calgary mayor.

Now that Naheed Nenshi could be the next Premier of Alberta, here's what I know that he knows...

Nenshi attended TEDxYYC when Kirk Sorensen spoke about Thorium and Molten-Salt Reactors. So he's at least heard a solid 15 minute pitch for where humanity can go with Advanced Nuclear.

Nenshi attended a 2014 science fair when Joe Willis's presentation was on decarbonizing Alberta with nuclear power.

...that's all that I know he knows! I assume Naheed Nenshi has been exposed to far more than that, but for all the interest I've had in nuclear power, and the times I've been around Nenshi... that's the overlap which included nuclear power!

More importantly, Naheed Nenshi has stated he is open to the technology and is likely part of Alberta's clean energy mix. And I basically trust his ability to (if he has not yet done) deep-dive into the topic, and assess the arguments for-and-against in a rational manner.

As I say in the video, if all I cared about was nuclear power then I would consider supporting Danielle Smith and UCP. My support for Nenshi is because Albertans have a lot of other issues to contend with as well, and I trust his judgement. And I trust Naheed Nenshi will never "rage farm" as I see many politicians doing today.
