Happy 80th Birthday to the great Lee Michaels!
Here is an audience tape capturing the first few minutes of Tell Me How Would You Feel, Lee's opening number on January 23, 1970 at the Fillmore West. Lee's cover of this Ray Charles / Percy Mayfield tune launched into a 20 minute jam with his drummer, Barry "Frosty" Smith. Fans of Fillmore West poster art will note that the headliner at this run of shows January 22-25 of 1970 was supposed to be Savoy Brown. They canceled and Bill Graham asked Lee Michaels to substitute as the headliner on a bill that also featured Zephyr and blues great Albert King. Thanks to the anonymous taper for this wonderful capture and for freely sharing it with us.
I am seeking Lee Michaels live audio (audience, soundboard, etc.) and film footage for digital transfer, archiving, and free trading (nothing for sale). My archive includes live audio from 1968 to 1978 and there is much more out there to be found. Please contact me listadadigandia [at] gmail [dot] com if you taped any shows. And, please support Lee Michaels by purchasing his A&M catalog which is now available on both CD and mp3. Please check out Lee's podcast @leemichaelspodcast where he shared interesting stories about the music scene and his current pursuits, along with new music and a film he made. Check it out!
