Designed for people who have minimal or no experience with improvisation, but perhaps a little bit of piano experience, I show you how to set up a context for successful basic piano improvisation: a simple chord progression in the key of C in which the left hand plays root position C, Dm, F and C chords and the right hand sticks to the notes of the C major pentatonic scale (also known as the Am, or A minor, pentatonic scale--these refer to the same collection of 5 notes). This video does not get into adding the 6th--"blue"--note typical of jazz and blues improvisation. (But if you want to know what it is, it's D# [D sharp]). I demonstrate a bit about what makes for good improvisation--awareness of chord/key, dissonance and consonance, repetitive patterns and basic phrase structures (specifically three part phrases, which could be represented as A A B). Don't be afraid to explore and try different things. Let your ear--and your body--be your guide. Be patient, and try to enjoy the process. Improvisation, though it takes focus and awareness, should be truly rewarding for the player and should bring you the joy of creativity and discovery, no matter what level you're at. I do not get deeply into the concept of rhythm/keeping a beat here, but I intend to do that in forthcoming videos.
