Rashida Tlaib on the Public Banking Act: Instead of our Wall Street-dominated banking system, with its predatory and discriminatory practices, we can build a democratic financial system that puts community needs above private profit. That is why Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and I are introducing the Public Banking Act.
Instead of excluding millions of people who currently lack a checking or savings account, public and postal banks can ensure that everyone has access to basic financial services.
Instead of providing $1.4 trillion in fossil fuel financing since 2016—like Chase, Citi, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America—public banks can invest in and transform our communities—providing affordable housing, good union jobs, and a clean energy future.
Alternatives already exist: The Bank of North Dakota has successfully operated for over a century. It’s time for a democratically accountable financial system that serves everyone. It’s time for public banking for all.
