1️⃣ Improve your 400m PB – Boosting top-end speed gets your body used to running faster than 800m race pace. This shifts your perception of speed, so on race day, pace feels more like a strong cruise than an all-out sprint.
2️⃣ Build a strong aerobic base – Increasing your fatigue threshold by improving Zone 2 pace lifts your whole system (Zones 3, 4, 5). You’ll need to run faster to even reach those zones, meaning you can run faster, longer — making 800m pace feel comfortable and controlled.
3️⃣ Do speed endurance workouts – Train your body to handle repeated fast efforts with short recovery, improving lactate clearance and race day grit.
Workout Example:
1k @ ~3k race pace (build fatigue)
3 min rest
3 sets of:
• 3 x 400m @ 6–8 sec above 800m pace (1 min rest between reps)
• 3 min rest between sets
